If customers can pay you online, you get paid faster and chase fewer invoices. South Africa has several payment providers that work with small business websites. This guide explains the options and what to check before you choose.
The main ways to get paid online
- Card payments: customers pay with a debit or credit card on a secure page hosted by the provider.
- Instant EFT: the customer logs in to their own bank and approves a payment, which is confirmed in seconds.
- Payment links: you send a link by email or WhatsApp and the customer pays without you needing a full online shop.
- Recurring payments: a saved card is charged automatically each month or year, which suits subscriptions, hosting, retainers and memberships.
- Manual EFT: the customer pays into your bank account and sends proof. It is simple but needs you to check payments by hand.
Providers to look at
Providers such as PayFast, Paystack and Ozow are widely used by South African businesses, and others exist too. They differ in the payment methods they offer, how they handle recurring payments, how quickly money is paid out, and what the fees are. Compare current pricing on each provider’s own website, because fees and terms change.
What to check before choosing
- Fees: look at the percentage and any fixed fee per transaction, plus fees for payouts, refunds or chargebacks. A fixed fee matters a lot on small amounts.
- Payment methods: do they support the ways your customers prefer to pay?
- Recurring payments: if you bill monthly, check how saved-card billing works and whether it integrates with your website or billing software.
- Payout timing: how long until money reaches your bank account?
- Integration: is there a ready-made plugin for your platform, such as WordPress, WooCommerce or your billing system?
- Verification: expect to provide business or ID documents so the provider can confirm who you are.
- Support: can you reach a real person if a payment goes wrong?
Keep payments secure
- Use a provider whose hosted checkout page handles the card details, so card numbers never touch your own website.
- Use HTTPS on your whole site.
- Keep your website software and plugins updated.
- Protect your payment provider login with a strong password and two-factor authentication.
Make paying easy and trustworthy
- Show prices clearly, and say whether VAT is included.
- Explain your refund and cancellation policy in plain language.
- Send an automatic confirmation email after payment.
- Test the full payment flow on a phone before you go live.
Test before you launch
Most providers offer a test mode with test card numbers. Make a test purchase, check that the order or invoice updates, and confirm the confirmation email arrives. Fix problems before real customers meet them.
Keep your records tidy
Match every payment to an invoice, keep provider statements for your accountant, and reconcile weekly. Clean records make tax time much easier.
