Many small business websites look fine but bring in very few enquiries. The problem is rarely traffic. It is usually that visitors cannot quickly tell what you do, why they should trust you, or what to do next. Here are nine fixes that make a real difference, most of which cost nothing.
1. Say what you do in the first screen
Within five seconds a visitor should know what you offer, who it is for and where you work. Replace vague headlines like “Welcome to our website” with something concrete, such as “Accounting for small businesses in Pretoria”.
2. Pick one main action
Decide what you most want visitors to do: call, request a quote, book or buy. Make that button obvious on every page and use the same wording each time, for example “Request a quote”.
3. Put your phone number and WhatsApp link where people can see them
Many customers prefer to call or message. Put a click-to-call number and a WhatsApp button at the top of the page and in the footer. On a phone, the number should dial when tapped.
4. Keep forms short
Every extra field loses some people. Ask for a name, a way to reach them and what they need. Anything else can wait until you reply.
5. Show proof
Add real testimonials with names, photos of your work, logos of clients who agree to be shown, and your Google reviews. Specific stories (“We cut their quote time from three days to one”) work better than general praise.
6. Make prices and process clear
People hesitate when they cannot tell what something costs or what happens after they enquire. Show “from” prices if exact prices vary, and explain the steps: enquire, get a quote, pay a deposit, start. Clarity builds trust.
7. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly
Most visits in South Africa come from phones. Open your site on your own phone using mobile data. If it is slow, hard to read or hard to tap, you are losing customers. See our guide on making a website faster.
8. Answer the questions customers always ask
Add a short FAQ with questions such as how long a job takes, how payment works, what areas you cover and what the guarantee is. Each answer removes a reason to leave.
9. Reply fast
An enquiry that waits a day often goes to someone else. Set up email and WhatsApp notifications on your phone and aim to reply within a few hours on business days.
Test one change at a time
Change one thing, then watch your enquiries for two to four weeks. Use a simple tally of calls, messages and form submissions. If the number goes up, keep the change.
