A new website does not bring customers by itself. The first ten customers usually come from a mix of people you already know, local visibility and consistent follow-up. This 30-day plan shows you how to build that, one week at a time, with almost no advertising spend.
Week 1: Get the foundation right
- Write your offer in one sentence. “We help [who] to [result] in [time or place].” If you cannot say it simply, customers will not understand it either.
- Set your price or price range. People trust businesses that are clear about cost. If you cannot publish exact prices, publish “from” prices.
- Make sure you have one clear page that sells. A simple site with your services, proof, contact details and a button to enquire is enough to start.
- Claim your Google Business Profile and set up WhatsApp Business. See our guides on Google Business Profile and WhatsApp Business.
- Set up a business email on your own domain, such as info@yourbusiness.co.za, instead of a free address.
Week 2: Start with the people who already trust you
- List 50 people: past customers, former colleagues, friends, family and suppliers.
- Send each one a personal message that explains what you do and asks, “Do you know anyone who needs this?” Do not blast a group message.
- Offer a simple referral thank-you, such as a discount or a small gift, and keep your promise.
- Ask for two or three testimonials from happy customers you already have.
Week 3: Show up where local customers are
- Join community and business groups for your area and be helpful before you sell. Answer questions and share useful tips.
- Contact complementary businesses that serve the same customers and agree to refer each other.
- Post twice this week on the one social platform where your customers spend time. Show real work, real results and real people.
- Add your business to a few trusted local directories with the same name, address and phone number everywhere.
Week 4: Follow up and ask for reviews
- Follow up every enquiry that has not replied. Most sales happen after the second or third message.
- Ask every customer you served for a Google review and send the direct link.
- Write one helpful article or post that answers a question customers often ask, and share it on your pages.
- Review what worked and do more of it.
Track four numbers
- How many people you contacted.
- How many replied.
- How many quotes you sent.
- How many became customers.
A simple spreadsheet is enough. Within a month you will see which step loses people and where to fix it.
What to avoid
- Waiting until the website is perfect before talking to anyone.
- Spending on adverts before your offer and follow-up are clear.
- Posting everywhere instead of doing one channel well.
- Ignoring enquiries for days.
