Domain Name vs Web Hosting: What Your Business Needs in 2026

When you start a website, “domain” and “hosting” often appear together in the same order form. They are connected, but they do different jobs. Knowing the difference helps you plan your launch, protect your online identity and avoid surprises when a renewal or provider change comes around.

What is a domain name?

A domain is the name people use to reach you online, such as yourbusiness.co.za. It is registered through a registrar for a set period and must be renewed to keep using it. Your registration account holds important controls: keep its contact email current, use a strong unique password and note the renewal date.

What is web hosting?

Hosting is the service that stores your website’s files and makes them available when someone visits. A WordPress site also needs the server software, database and resources required to run WordPress. Hosting can also include tools such as a control panel, email, backups or support, but what is included depends on the provider and plan.

Where does DNS fit in?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the directory that tells browsers and other services where to find your domain. DNS records can point the website to a web server and route email to a mail service. Changing nameservers or records can therefore affect more than the homepage: email and verification services may depend on them too.

ICANN explains that domain registration is separate from the website and hosting services that make an online presence work. A registered name by itself does not contain your website.

Can one company provide both?

Yes. Some providers let you buy a domain and hosting together, which can make setup simpler. You can also keep them with separate providers. Either way, make sure you know who controls the domain, where DNS is managed, what each renewal costs and how to move the site or mail later. Ask whether the domain is registered in your name and how to obtain an authorisation code if you transfer it.

A quick checklist before you sign up

  • Choose a short name that is easy to say and spell.
  • Confirm the renewal price and who the registrant will be.
  • Check which hosting features you need for your site.
  • Save your current DNS settings before changing them.
  • Keep a separate backup of website files and data.
